All of the Elbaite Tourmaline from the Coronel Murta pocket discovered in 2019 displays fabulous hues of hot pink, but this little beauty is a cornucopia of colours and clarity.  The Coronel Murta pegmatite is typical of those across the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, an area known the world over for its magnificent gem minerals.  This single, ex. matrix Elbaite crystal measures 4.5 cm tall and unlike many Tourmalines from this pocket, has a somewhat elongated cross-section, becoming more tabular, with a hexagonal symmetry.  The crystal is completely transparent and gemmy, displaying excellent optical clarity, but is unsuitable for cutting due to a pervading infilling of inclusions, these being caused by dislocations within the Tourmaline lattice rather than included minerals.  The crystal grades from a lower half, which grades in colour horizontally across the prism rather than vertically as is usually the case.  This is of gemmy pale cerise with a narrow vertical band of hot cerise up one face.  About halfway the entire prism becomes hot cerise-pink, with a final zone up to the termination of reddish-pink with hints of orange.  The termination is formed from an asymmetric pyramid with one long sloping face and mirror smooth and bright termination faces.  This is a beautiful Elbaite Tourmaline from Coronel Murta, mounted vertically on a small, colourless acrylic base.
