This impressive Fluorite cabinet-specimen is from one of the lesser known mines in Weardale, Burtree Pasture, north of the village of Cowshill, County Durham.  Despite being the largest lead-producing mine in the 19th century, specimens tend to be scant in collections, even when heavily represented with Fluorite from Weardale.  Put simply, Burtree Pasture specimens are hardly ever seen for sale, to my knowledge anyway.  This eye-catching specimen comprises of a single corner, cleaved from a larger crystal, which if complete must have been a sight to behold!  The three face edges measure between 6 and 8 cm and although mainly translucent grading to opaque, the one corner and adjacent three edges exhibit many semi-transparent zones, some of which have good colour zoning.  The colour is rather mottled in shades of light lavender, mid violet and rich blackberry.  In direct sunlight the Fluorite naturally fluoresces bright, vivid blackberry-purple with excellent zoning and under LWUV is bright violet with brighter, creamy-violet edges.  Superb.
