This magnificent double terminated Smoky Quartz is from Gletschhorn, a mountain in the Furka Pass Area of Uri, Switzerland, with an elevation of 3,305 m (10,843 ft) and situated in the far mid-south of the country.  It is because of mineralisation like this that the term Alpine-type deposit is applied all around the world, where Quartz crystals and often other minerals have crystallised in clefts or fractures in the mountain sides.  A tradition in Switzerland and adjacent Alpine countries is for specialist climbers to explore for such cavities and then carefully extract and transport them back to the valleys below for sale.    This splendid ex-matrix crystal measures a massive 9.3 x 14.0 x 5.3 cm and is perfectly transparent throughout almost all the specimen, with the Quartz a uniform mid-clove to sherry brown.  Quite small, printed text can be read through the thickness of the crystals.  Both terminations are sharp and complete, and the hexagonal crystal is flattened making it asymmetric.  The edge which might be considered the top of the specimen has one 4 mm chip and the back face has a large area of greyish-milky micro-fractured Quartz where it was in contact with the cleft wall.  The overall lustre is bright and glassy, with the occasional face naturally micro-etched with a slightly diminished lustre.  This is a wonderfully aesthetic Smoky Quartz form Gletschhorn, Switzerland.
