This terrific matched pair of interpenetrant twinned Fluorite crystals is from Helen’s Pocket at the Lady Annabella mine close to Eastgate in Weardale, County Durham.  This pocket is named for Helen Wilkinson, a well-known local collector and mine explorer.  The specimen is somewhat unusual because Fluorite crystals from this pocket are characteristically smaller and untwined, once again showing that twinned crystals are often larger than their single counterparts.  The two dominant Fluorites on this miniature measure 1.9 and 1.8 cm on their longest edges and are a mixture of transparent zones distributed throughout translucent Fluorite with internal flaws.  Typically, of Helen’s pocket, the Fluorite is mellow chrome to slightly bluish green, but in this case showing distinct colour zoning as well.  Each of the large crystals contains a strong lilac band a few millimetres beneath the crystal faces.  A great miniature from Helen’s Pocket at the Lady Annabella mine.
