This compact miniature group of rich green Fluorite crystals is a thing of great beauty, a specimen which certainly makes you look twice and then contemplate just how wonderful nature is.  A large single Fluorite crystal measuring 2.9 x 1.8 x 1.7 cm sits at roughly 45 degrees on a small dark grey matrix of ironstone and snuggled-up next to this is a smaller yet equally beautiful interpenetrant twinned Fluorite.  One corner of the large crystal is slightly cleaved, but this is natural as the surface is regrown with a deposit of later generation Fluorite.  The majority of each prism is transparent and gemmy and the crystals display subtle colour zoning in shades of emerald, spring leaf and yellowish green.  When held in direct daylight the surfaces of the prisms turn stunning blackberry purple, especially the topmost faces where it would appear there is a greater concentration of rare earth elements (REEs).  It is REEs which make Weardale Fluorite so fluorescent.  Under LWUV the Fluorite fluoresces bright bluish white.  This is a wonderful miniature from the Bypass Pocket at Diana Maria mine just west of the village of Frosterley in Weardale, County Durham.
