Rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning mines is a firm favourite with collectors, but it is unusual to see a specimen like this forming a silky botryoidal hemisphere with a hollow rear surface.  The N'Chwaning Mines are situated within the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa.  Three mines have been developed to work this rich hydrothermally upgraded orebody, named N'Chwaning I, II and III.  Very often when specimens are recovered the specific mine goes unrecorded, so the collective locality of N'Chwaning Mines is used.  This large thumbnail specimen is ex-matrix and composed from a solid translucent shell of deep cherry red Rhodochrosite of between 8 to 10 mm thick and with a texture and lustre of brushed silk.  An aesthetic and most beautiful N'Chwaning Rhodochrosite.
