If you have been on the lookout for a good Native Gold from probably the most famous of Welsh gold mines, Gwynfynydd, then this may be the specimen you’ve been waiting for!  Gwynfynydd lies in the Dolgellau gold belt of North Wales, which fringes the eastern and southern sides of the Harlech Dome.  Almost all the major gold deposits occur where the mineralised Quartz veins intersect black, pyritic mudstones, the Clogau Shales.  This small cabinet specimen comprises of milky-white Quartz veinstone and black to golden-orange massive Sphalerite with an impressively rich distribution of Native Gold.  The Gold is clearly associated with the Sphalerite, with perhaps a good 90% embedded in the Sphalerite and just, say, 10% in the Quartz.  The Native Gold occurs as buttery yellow golden metallic grains and small hackly flakes across all faces of the specimen, both back and front and is an impressive example from Gwynfynydd.
