ID: CC2208
An attractively formed specimen of double terminated hexagonal Witherite from the classic British location of Nentsberry Haggs mine at Alston in Cumbria. The main Witherite crystal, measuring to 2.2 cm, sits horizontally on top of the specimen, displaying the ideal hexagonal, slightly curved barrel habit, coated in white Baryte, so typical of this location. The Witherite terminations also display an etched habit, where the carbonate Witherite has been partly replaced by the sulphate Baryte. The Witherite crystal sits on a matrix of bladed Barytocalcite crystals coated with white Baryte, with one or two further smaller crystals of Witherite. This miniature comes with a Lindsay Greenbank Collection label, No. LG578, which notes “from a cavity on Liverick Vein, in a cross-cut between Treloar and High Raise Veins, Nentsberry Haggs Mine, via Wellhope Shaft in Northumberland, 1989.”
