A seriously fantastic, large cabinet specimen of dendritic Native Silver fronds masking a good 80% of the sooty dark grey Native Arsenic matrix. This museum grade specimen is from Pöhla in the Schwarzenberg District of Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany. It is most probably the Pöhla-Tellerhäuser mine. This mine was best known as a producer of uranium ore but like so many of these German uranium deposits, hosted a wide variety of other minerals. The geology and subsequent mineralisation at Pöhla is complex, simplistically summarised here as a succession of skarn, metasomatic, greisenization and hydrothermal processes. Measuring an impressive 19.5 x 8.0 x 4.0 cm, the Native Arsenic occupies most of this volume and displays scattered small vugs across its surface. As stated, with the estimated coverage of dendritic Native Silver over all its surfaces, both back and front, the actual area of crystallised Native Silver amounts to approximately 250 cm2. None of the Native Silver is silver in colour, more a mottled mixture of reddish caramel burnished tan. All the Native Silver occurs as exquisite branching feather and fern-like plumes lying parallel to the matrix surface, yet proud of it, supported by underlying dendritic layers. The one thing you must be cognisant of is just where to place your fingers when handling it; the delicate dendrites cover almost every handling point. It is a heavy specimen because of the considerable amount of Native Arsenic with a relative density (SG) of 5.73 g/cm3; almost six times the weight of water. No more need be said, this is a magnificent Native Silver from Saxony.
