Virtuous Lady mine, close to the picturesque Devon village of Buckland Monachorum, has produced some of Britain’s most enigmatic and sought after specimens since several well documented discoveries were made in the early 1800s. Its minerals maybe what would be termed very common; Quartz and Siderite for example, but oh my word, do they form spectacular specimens which readily announce “Virtuous Lady” before you have even glanced at the label! This magnificent cabinet specimen of Arsenopyrite with Siderite and Quartz, displays all the classic characteristics of colour and morphology associated with this most special mine. A 10 cm tall Quartz crystal dominates the specimen. In its base, it is seen to be a normal-coloured translucent, misty light grey Quartz, but this is largely masked by milk-white near-surface layer. The prism’s morphology approaches the Muzo habit with alternating sized faces, three to four of which are entirely encrusted (and hidden) by overgrowths of botryoidal Siderite. Scattered over the exposed white faces are occasional hemispheres of mid-chocolate brown Siderite, adding a spotty effect. Attached to the Quartz crystal’s base is a 5.0 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm mass of pewter to whitish-silver Arsenopyrite crystals with a metallic lustre. This is a fabulous Arsenopyrite with Siderite and Quartz from Virtuous Lady mine. For a slightly larger, yet near-identical specimen in The Arthur Russell Collection of British Minerals (held in the Natural History Museum, London) see pages 69 (fig. 112) and 328 (fig. 652) in Roy Starkey’s Making it Mine: Sir Arthur Russell and his Mineral Collection. This stunning book is available from Crystal Classics, priced £40 plus p&p.
