This small miniature may well comprise of two common minerals from Alston Moor, but what a lovely combination they make, mainly thanks to the colour of the Ankerite. Ankerite varies in colour markedly across Alston Moor yet in this specimen it is closer to yellow than brown or cream. Curved composite Ankerite crystals of acidic golden buttercup yellow cover a flat matrix, at one end of which are what appear to be very tiny Marcasite crystals. Perched on the Ankerite is a 1.9 x 1.6 x 1.1 cm spheroidal cluster of lustrous metallic black Sphalerite crystals. A beautiful and eye-catching miniature from the mines on Alston Moor in east Cumbria.
