Forsterite with Humite

ID: CC28153
Monte Somma, part of the Somma-Vesuvius Complex near Naples in Italy, is type locality to Forsterite and Humite, both magnesium silicates but with the presence of iron in Humite.  This miniature from Monte Somma is rich in both species, the Forsterite occurring as small glassy deep olive-green crystals, typically less than 1 mm yet occasionally up to about 3 mm.  Although crystalline, it tends to appear as granular.  The Humite fills an open vug at on end and forms larger crystals than the Forsterite, some to almost 5 mm, mainly of translucent clove and rarely pale lemon.  This specimen is accompanied with two fine old Italian labels.
