When more closely examined, this large deep cherry-red octahedral Spinel crystal is seen to be a composite structure, built from interlocked individual octahedral crystals of between 0.5 and 1.5 cm on edge. The overall size of the complete crystal measures 2.7 cm on centre edges and around 2.2 cm on diagonal edges. Although octahedral, many of the compound crystals have a rounded, jelly-like framboidal habit, analogous to the framboidal structure of a raspberry. The individual crystals are translucent with gemmy patches and it is jauntily perched on a fine-grained granular matrix of pure white Quartz. The various framboids transmit differing shades of cherry, cranberry and ruby-red, giving a monochromatic patchwork quilt of rare beauty. This gorgeous crystal emits a ghostly deep blood-red fluorescence in long wave ultraviolet (LWUV). A stunning Spinel from Morogoro in the Uluguru Mountains of Tanzania in Eastern Africa.
