Based on the two accompanying labels, this is an extremely old and historic small cabinet specimen of the zeolite Harmotome from the mines at Strontian in the North West Highlands of Scotland. The village of Strontian gave its name to the element Strontium which was first isolated in ore from the nearby mines. The 9 x 6 cm display face is totally covered with characteristic blocky white Harmotome crystals of up to about 9 mm across, all with a bright glassy lustre. Two exceptionally old looking labels come with this specimen and glued beneath its base are two equally old labels, one marked ‘Strontian’, the other, ‘475’.
