Thin yellow coatings and crusts are often encountered on Fluorite from this region of Derbyshire and may be either form of the dimorphous cadmium sulphides Greenockite and Hawleyite. Although such coatings are common, I cannot recall ever seeing a specimen as rich as this before, so making it an excellent example. The hard grey crystalline Carboniferous limestone matrix is more vug than matrix, the vugs being completely lined with cubic Fluorite crystals averaging 2 to 3 mm and all richly coated in matt, lemon yellow Greenockite (or Hawleyite), chemically, CdS. Like so many classic localities, Fall Hill quarry is no longer open to collectors, but between the 1960s and mid-1990s was a firm favourite destination for a successful day of collecting. You may sometimes hear or read this quarry referred to as Fall Gate quarry, a commonly used yet incorrect name popular amongst British collectors. This small cabinet specimen comes with two collector’s labels, one highly detailed.
