A fabulously-crystallised, classic specimen of Native Copper from the copper mines of Houghton County in Upper Michigan, USA. Houghton County is just one of several counties which make-up the Keweenaw Peninsula, whose coastal outline stands-out from the surrounding mighty Lake Superior. Copper and silver mining in this area dates to pre-history and it is a known fact that the murky shapes of massive copper nuggets lying on the lake-bed were thought to be monstrous underwater serpents. A fact proven by the recent recovery of such treasures using offshore cranes! This amazing cabinet specimen displays numerous intergrown well developed crystals of Native Copper measuring to 3.8 cm, all with a superb and natural, slightly reddish-copper patina. A magnificent Native Copper specimen from Houghton County.
