A small cluster of beautifully crystallised Chalcocite nestles on top of an orange red, iron-stained brecciated Calcite matrix, the Calcite clasts cemented by a pervading Hematite infill. This small cabinet specimen is from Geevor mine by Pendeen in Cornwall, England, a mine quite close to Land’s End. Geevor exploited metal-rich veins within the Land’s End granite pluton, emplaced 279 million years ago during the Permian. Orange coloured Calcite is not commonly encountered generally worldwide but is a common feature at Geevor and Levant. The Chalcocite forms long, elegant and well terminated silver to dark grey crystals with a slightly sooty dark grey to dull metallic grey lustre and of up to 8 to 10 mm long. These are excellent Chalcocite crystals for the locality and will make a fine addition to any Cornish suite.
