Hingston Down is a large quarry still in operation to the west of Gunnislake, roughly midway between Callington and Tavistock, in Cornwall, England. Over its many working years it has clocked-up an impressive 64 mineral species and always seems to have something of interest to offer when the occasional collecting visit is allowed. This rather fabulous small cabinet specimen is composed of both large and small Quartz crystals which form an tangled jungle of intergrown crystals. The largest Quartz crystal measures 10 cm long by about 1.7 cm wide while the smaller acicular crystals are typically 5 to 12 mm and about 1 mm wide. The Quartz is overgrown by dark green Chlorite and yellowish-orange iron oxides, so producing a busy and fascinating specimen.
