This fabulous large cabinet specimen of beautifully crystallised golden tan Siderite and Baryte with Pyrrhotite and Quartz is from the Morro Velho mine at Nova Lima in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This gold mine has worked without interruption since 1725 and remains operational to this day, an amazingly long lifespan for a mine, making it the longest in continual operation in the world! It is famed for its superbly crystallised Siderite and this becomes apparent once this specimen has been seen. Stunning, saucer-like lenticular crystals of semi-transparent to translucent Siderite adorn a phyllite matrix completely hidden by these crystals and colourless to milky Baryte crystals. Both the Siderite and Baryte have a bright glassy lustre. Lightly sprinkled over the Siderite and Baryte are sub-millimetre iridescent Pyrrhotite crystals and at one corner stands a 1.8 cm colourless Quartz crystal. A magnificent example of Siderite from the historic Morro Velho mine.
