An equant dodecahedral Sphalerite crystal measuring 1.3 cm in diameter sits at the centre of a undulating small Quartz plate coated with 1 to 3 mm Quartz crystals. The Sphalerite is translucent burnt cherry red with an orange tint and is surrounded by several much smaller crystals strewn over the Quartz matrix. This lovely miniature is from Shizhuyuan mine in Yizhang County, Hunan, China, which works a skarn-hosted polymetallic deposit, the Dongpo ore field. This beautiful Sphalerite comes with a Don Edwards (Tideswell, Derbyshire) label, whose rock shop was a favourite haunt of British collectors, including myself, for almost fifty years!
