A fine large miniature Dioptase from its type locality at Altyn-Tyube in Karagandy Province, Kazakhstan, the site of very ancient mining operations which back to the Neolithic (4300 - 2000 BCE) when copper was mined. I wonder if they encountered Dioptase back then? Surely they must have done and would have thought it as beautiful as we do. A dense, beige-tan quartzite matrix is overgrown with a layer of semi-crystalline Quartz on top of which sit the deep emerald green Dioptase crystals. The Dioptase, a copper silicate, forms equant and elongated crystals of up to 1.2 cm long with opaque to translucent cores beneath reasonably gemmy faces. The interface between the transparent and translucent zones causes light to be reflected back as if from a layer of crumpled green metallic foil, so producing a beautiful effect.
