Berg Aukas, a mine which conjures-up just one mineral name, Descloizite; the mine and the species being synonymous. This is a little unfair to the mine as it has produced 37 different species, but it is for the best Descloizite in the world it will always be remembered. Berg Aukas mine is in the Grootfontein District of the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia, only about 55 km south east of Tsumeb. This small cabinet specimen is a beautiful and highly representative example with a roughly 8 x 6 cm display surface totally covered with intergrown rosettes of lenticular Descloizite crystals. These are a characteristic black with hints of clove at the thinner edges and interestingly, all display a subtle yet prominent iridescence. The crystals cover a matrix of strong, massive and reasonably vuggy Descloizite with many much smaller yet well-formed crystals across the base. Its perfect damage-free condition; quality and size of crystals and peacock iridescence make this a splendid specimen from the Berg Aukas mine.
