A super example of Rhodochrosite with Quartz from the world famous Uchucchacua mine in Lima Department, Peru. This mine works a hydrothermal epigenetic deposit for silver, lead and zinc, yet has over its operating years produced seventy valid mineral species and can boast an impressive ten type locality minerals! The Rhodochrosite forms translucent to semi-transparent tabular crystals averaging 8 to 10 mm, built from stacked and layered composite micro-rhombic crystals. These fill a roughly triangular vug measuring 6 cm long, tapering from 6 to 2 cm wide in a sooty black manganese matrix. Scattered amongst the Rhodochrosite are several colourless to gemmy Quartz crystals, some double terminated.
