Wow, what a fabulous and very different cabinet specimen! A hedgehog-like dome of radiating, lustrous metallic Sphalerite crystals peppered with cubic purple Fluorite crystals and topped with spheroidal clusters of creamy-white Baryte. Finally and adding a spectacular twist, a 4 cm naturally etched shard-like crystal of Fluorite protrudes from one end, appearing at first glance more like an Amethyst crystal. This delightful combination is from Elmwood mine at Carthage, Tennessee, USA. The Sphalerite forms excellent crystals of up to 1.5 cm and possibly bigger and when viewed closely, many are seen to be translucent cinnamon brown. The specimen comes with a Don Edwards label from the Tideswell Dale Rock Shop, Derbyshire.
