This most attractive miniature of Uvarovite, a calcium and chrome bearing species of Garnet, is from the area around Outokumpu in the Eastern Region of Finland. This mineralised region covers quite an extensive area and it is not known if this specimen is from one of the many mines or an outcrop in the district. The Uvarovite forms equant crystals of between 2 and 9 mm across and whose clarity varies proportionally to size; the smallest being gemmy, the largest opaque, with translucent intermediate crystals. However, some of the largest crystals do contain small semi-transparent zones which transmit the stunning rich emerald green associated with this species of Garnet. The Uvarovite crystals sit on a grey-green matrix of mixed Quartz, Uvarovite and finely disseminated golden metallic sulphides, mainly Chalcopyrite.
