An interesting miniature of Magnetite from the Aosta Valley in Piedmont, Italy. We are most familiar with Magnetite occurring in the octahedral form of the cubic (= isometric) system, but in this case the crystals are cubic, if a little elongated and slightly curved. The specimen is solid Magnetite, the well-formed crystals covering an inner core of massive Magnetite. The crystals average 8 to 10 mm on edge but do exceed 1.2 cm, all with a brilliant, black metallic lustre. It is suggested on the accompanying label it may originate from around Ivrea, a town in north-western Italy.
