Sky blue Fluorite and crystallised Chalcopyrite on Quartz from South Caradon mine. That’s enough really, need I say more? Every collector of British minerals is cognisant of South Caradon Fluorite but, dare I say, probably most do not have a specimen in their collections. Good Fluorites from here are like hen’s teeth and have become legendary; I first became aware of such things in my early twenties but did not manage to acquire a specimen for another forty years. This gorgeous example is ex the Mike Brooke and Edward R. Loye Collections with labels from both. It is a large miniature at just under 7 cm maximum dimension, of translucent octahedral and modified cuboctahedral, sky to cornflower blue Fluorite crystals averaging 0.8 to 1.2 cm but with many much larger. The crystals are built from multiple-stepped micro-cubes forming crystals of a frosted appearance due to their micro-stepped surfaces, just stunning under low magnification. Richly distributed amongst these are numerous Chalcopyrite crystals, most with a bright orange tinted golden surface and hints of peacock iridescence. The underlying matrix is that of apple green Fluorite coated with milky white terminated Quartz crystals, although these can only be seen along the side s of the specimen. It is a wonderful miniature of Fluorite with Chalcopyrite on Quartz from South Caradon mine at St. Cleer in the Liskeard District of Cornwall.
