Geevor mine, close to Land’s End at the most westerly tip of Cornwall, famously extends out under the Atlantic Ocean and has produced fifty-five mineral species. It is a mine renowned for many finely crystallised mineral species, one of the most varied in colour and habit being Calcite. The mine is unusual in that it has produced fine specimen of orange Calcite and when you think about this, orange is a colour not that common in the mineral world. This large miniature is excellent for both the colour and habit of Calcite, forming two almost perfect tangerine spheres sitting on a bed of milky Quartz crystals, sprinkled with micro-crystals of Hematite. Examined with a loupe the sphere’s surfaces have a fine sucrosic texture resulting from countless micro-crystals of orange Calcite. The large sphere averages 1.7 cm in diameter and the tiny sphere, 5 mm. This is a choice miniature of orange Calcite from Geevor.
