The easily accessible Tynebottom mine at Garrigill in the Alston Moor District of Cumbria, England, has been, and remains, a favourite haunt of British mineral collectors and over the years has produced almost forty different species and countless good specimens. Tynebottom mine has only recently become the type locality for the newly named species Bridgesite-(Ce). The stunning miniature described here is a deep sky to duck egg blue botryoidal Calcite richly coating a dark grey shale-like matrix. Tynebottom mine is renowned for its vibrant pink Cobalt-bearing Calcite, but blue is new to me. It comes with Mike Brooke and Lindsay & Patricia Greenbank Collection labels, the latter recording “Calcite. Dripstone formation with copper colouration. From the flats in the Tynebottom Limestone, collected by A. Walshaw in the late 70’s.” See the Mineralogical Record “The Lindsay Greenbank Collection: Classic Minerals of Northern England” (supplement to Vol. 41, No. 1, Jan-Feb 2010) for biographies of Lindsay Greenbank and Anthony Walshaw. A beautiful and rare specimen.
