For some reason I have a weakness for Cornish Siderites, especially those from the Camborne-Illogan-Redruth mining district. This small cabinet specimen is a beauty, the display face totally encrusted with large (typically 1 to 1.5 cm wide) yet thin lenticular blades, peppered with occasional brassy Chalcopyrite crystals plus Quartz and Fluorite. The specimen is ex. the Mike Brooke Collection and together with his and a Rex Cook label, a handwritten label in pencil, dated 1967, is surely that which a South Crofty miner put with the specimen. Exact location details are provided: 4th Lode, 360 Fathom Level, midway between Robinsons and Cooks shafts, South Crofty mine. ‘Cooks’ is short for New Cook’s Kitchen shaft. The matrix, fully visible in the base, is massive pale blue Fluorite mixed with granular Quartz and Cassiterite. A really terrific specimen from South Crofty mine at Pool, mid-way between Camborne and Redruth in Cornwall.
