This excellent specimen of Fluorite crystals is from the Minerva mine in Hardin County, Illinois.  The Fluorite forms intergrown lilac cubic crystals to 8.8 cm on edge with a pale amber to straw-yellow body colour.  The combination of the two different colours interact to generate many subtle mixes of colour, across the surface of the crystals and internally, especially along internal cleavage planes.  Lilac transforms to lavender-blue and warm mauve within the cubic prisms and between the intersecting planes, coloured cubes are formed with lilac cubes juxtaposed against pale lemon.  The crystals are included with granular and crystalline Chalcopyrite and the surfaces encrusted with stubby, equant colourless and gemmy Calcite crystals averaging about 4 to 6 mm and bright, brassy golden Chalcopyrite crystals of 1 to 2 mm.  This is a magnificent Illinois Fluorite, with aesthetic preferential overgrowths of glassy Calcite and reflective Pyrite.
