Fluorite on Dolomite with Baryte

ID: CC6038
Fine, semi-transparent sky-blue cubic Fluorite crystals nestle in a bed of creamy Dolomite crystals from the Ullcoats mine by the town of Egremont in west Cumbria, England.  Excellent, reasonably gemmy light blue Fluorite crystals measure to 1.3 cm forming an intergrown cluster.  These developed on slightly pink saddle habit crystals of pearly lustred Dolomite, with an area of bladed white Baryte crystals, all covering a red-brown Hematite matrix.  This very pleasing combination of minerals is most probably from the adjacent Florence mine, as described to me by mineral dealer Ralph Sutcliffe and former chief mine surveyor Raymond Clements.  At one time the two mines were connected underground and ore was trammed from Florence into Ullcoats and from here brought to surface.  Because the ore emerged at surface from the Ullcoats’ shaft it was often recorded as originating from this mine.  Our label reflects the locality named with this specimen, but this explanation explains its probable true location.  Such beautiful blue Fluorite from this mine is the most highly valued colour from west Cumbria and this is a superb cabinet specimen.  It is accompanied with a William (Bill) Creighton label from his former museum in the Cumbrian market town of Cockermouth.
