This beautiful sky blue to light teal cluster of double terminated Baryte crystals is jauntily perched on a larger matrix almost totally encrusted with slightly pink tinged cream Dolomite crystals with a superb pearlescent lustre. Like so many fine specimens of its day, the nearest location recorded is that of Egremont, the small mining town in west Cumbria. There is certainly nothing to fret over in not knowing the exact mine from which it originates, as many of the world’s best specimens from this district bear no greater detail. The Baryte crystals measure up to about 7.5 cm long and the highly lustrous glassy crystals stack one upon another in precise parallel alignment. These prisms are translucent, often with gemmy, transparent tips. A little micro (and I mean micro!) crystallised Pyrite occurs with the Dolomite. It is a beautiful Baryte indeed.
