Corundum var. Sapphire

ID: CC8052
A completely gorgeous barrel-shaped, double terminated Corundum crystal of the blue variety Sapphire from Ratnapura in Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka.  At 4.8 cm long this is a good-sized specimen of Sapphire and displays beautifully all the characteristics we associate with this species.  The crystal is typically barrel-shaped, being wide at its middle and tapering in jerkily-stepped ribs towards its pointed terminations at each end.  One end is perfectly terminated whereas the opposite end shows a small point of attachment.  The colour alternates between a sensational and vivid cornflower-blue and milky-white giving the crystal a striking appearance.  Two smaller Sapphire crystals branch out from the main body and are again tipped vivid cornflower-blue.  A fantastic sapphire crystal from this world-famous gemstone locality in Sri Lanka.
