A terrific crystal of Ruby Corundum in a matrix of milky Calcite from the Jegdalek Ruby Deposit in Kabul Province, Afghanistan.  The 4 cm long Ruby crystal forms a translucent magenta-pink prism with horizontally striated faces and termination.  The crystal faces are not sharply defined yet are readily apparent and great for display.  This extensive Corundum deposit, hosted in a Calcite-Dolomite sequence is worked by about 20 mines and more than 2,000 open pits.  When placed under LWUV this lovely specimen fluoresces a feint yet intense scarlet.
