Phenakite

ID: CC8109
Phenakite is a rare beryllium orthosilicate found in pegmatites and is a highly sought after species.  This specimen from Malyshevo in the Middle Urals of Russia is an exceptionally large off-matrix double terminated crystal weighing 115 g.  The colourless crystal has a milky-white hue and varies from essentially an opaque core to semi-transparent towards its terminations.  Coating two areas of the crystal are patches of a micro-crystalline silvery-grey mica, probably Muscovite.  A striking example of Phenakite for any collector of Russian or pegmatite minerals.
