Quartz on Hematite

ID: CC8356
A gorgeous small cabinet specimen of double terminated Smoky Quartz crystals on Hematite from Cleator Moor mine in Cumbria, England. Cleator Moor mine is situated at the southern boundary of Cleator Moor village, about half way between the famous mining towns of Frizington and Egremont. The Hematite occurs in two habits; botryoidal Kidney ore forming the matrix and covering the matrix, Specularite in metallic black curved interlocking blades to a few millimetres. Many perfect double-terminated Smoky Quartz crystals are embedded throughout the Specularite, the transparent and colourless smaller crystals showing the underlying plum-purple colour of the Hematite. The specimen is dominated by two splendid large Quartz crystals, the bigger measuring 3.5 cm from tip to tip and 3 cm broad at its centre. An excellent and most aesthetic west Cumbrian Smoky Quartz with Specularite Hematite. Specimens such as this are always lovely, but this has that je ne sais quoi, certainly a thing of great beauty.
