The display surface of this quite stunning cabinet-sized Fluorite specimen can only be described as jet black, a remarkable colour for Fluorite.  Turned upside down, the base is a mottled array of delicious blackberry-purples and blacks, but there is no sign of the former in the crystal faces.  The intergrown cubic crystals are developed up to 3 cm on edge and have plate-like stepped surfaces with a semi-silky lustre.  This beautiful Fluorite is from the Marienschacht mine in the W├Âlsendorf Fluorite Mining District of Bavaria, Germany, a mine that eventually closed in 1979.  A splendid Fluorite of amazing colour.
