A super example of a characteristically developed hexagonal Corundum crystal with a broad barrel-like centre tapering in opposite directions with stepped prism faces, and occasional dislocations in axis direction. The specimen is from the famous ancient gem-bearing river gravels in the Ratnapura District of Sabaragamuwa Province in Sri Lanka. This is a translucent pale lemony-cream coloured Sapphire with naturally etched surface patterns and an earthy lustre. The varietal name Sapphire is applied to any colour of Corundum (not just blue), save that of red which is then named ruby.
