This amazing large cabinet nail-head Calcite crystal was collected in 1997 in Ballyegan quarry at Castleisland in County Kerry, Ireland and will make a showstopper in any Irish collection.  Ballyegan is an operating limestone quarry and when cavities containing such crystals are encountered in the working face, recovery is often impossible due to safety and accessibility reasons.  The Calcite forms a single hexagonal, milky-cream prism with a trigonal termination containing Mercedes-Benz style trigonal symmetry highlighted by a slightly translucent pink Calcite.  The prism faces are partly layered and stepped, with one face interrupted by a roughly 6 x 4 cm area of glassy terminated milky Quartz crystals.  Under LWUV the prism fluoresces a feint, ethereal mauve-violet with small patches of orange red on parts of the termination.  Please note, the fluorescence is weak, but worthy of mention.  A superb Calcite from the famous 1997 discovery at Ballyegan quarry.
