An excellent specimen of Chalcopyrite on Baryte from a mine commonly referred to as Deep Ecton, on the south western fringe of the Derbyshire Orefield. The mine owned by the Duke of Devonshire is known to date back to the 17th century, and is probably much older. The deposit is a pipe-like structure mined to a depth of around 350mts in Limestone. The specimen we have from this well known Staffordshire mine, shows six intergrown spheres of white Baryte measuring to 2.4cm diameter. The Baryte spheres are largely covered by iridescent sparkling crystals of Chalcopyrite, which vary in colour from a rich metallic gold to a metallic light green. Crystals of Chalcopyrite included Calcite forms the matrix for this specimen. A neat specimen from this old copper mine. Sorry if the description is a bit wordy but it is one of our colleagues favorite locations.
