Hematite var. Kidney Ore

ID: CC10912

An elongated dome of Hematite from the Frizington mining district in the West Cumberland Iron Field of Cumbria, England.  The specimen has a natural (unsawn), almost perfectly flat base which reveals the structure and varying texture of the specimen to great advantage.  The display surface is of a remarkably high lustre, to a degree that suggests it has been artificially polished, but still retains its warty, botryoidal texture.  As the base of the specimen shows, the Hematite is a reddish-gunmetal-grey, but the display surface appears silver due to the mirror-like finish.  At one end of the specimen, a few patches of terracotta-red Hematite contrast well against the polished surface.
