Prominent sprays of Pyrolusite form the focal point of this specimen, on Calcite with Baryte. Specimens of Pyrolusite from Merehead Quarry are seldom seen due to the difficulty of collecting examples intact. The small cabinet example we have shows a main crystal fan of acicular crystals to 1.1cm long, with another small spray off to one side. The Pyrolusite has a slightly reddish tint, probably due to a thin coating of an Fe oxide. Small white crystals groups of Baryte are associated with the Pyrolusite, on a Calcite matrix encased in grey-black Mn oxides.
