The Florence mine, close to Egremont in West Cumbria, England, may have a limited suite of mineral species, but this is more than compensated for by their superb crystals, habits and combinations.  This small cabinet specimen of double terminated milky-grey Quartz crystals and “Specularite”,  the bladed form of Hematite, sit on a triangular rib of dull brick-red botryoidal Hematite.  This has rich drusy coatings of “Specularite” (also known as “specular hematite”) as black lustrous blades on both sides of the rib.  The Quartz crystals are equant double-terminated prisms, with the largest measuring 2.2 cm on edge and about 3 cm tip to tip.  A neatly written label is adhered to one end and indicates being collected in March 1981.
