Stalactite Rhodochrosite is one of the most desirable forms of the mineral, especially from the world renowned location of the Capillitas Mine, Argentina. The mine is recorded to have been worked by the Incas, and later by the Spanish. The mine developed a number of polymetallic veins mostly dominated by Rhodochrosite, and is noted for the large cavities of stalactitic Rhodochrosite recorded to 3 metres long. The specimen we have is a fantastic polished slice displaying the annular growth rings to advantage. The concentric banding is unusually gemmy and coloured from a pink to white with typical serrated boundaries. The thin outer rind is complete around the edge of the slice. The specimen is particularly impressive when back lit. A fine classic stalactitic Rhodochrosite from this pre-Conquistador mine.
