GALENA on SIDERITE

Neudorf, Harzgerode, Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
$3000€2521£2205$3000
SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

An absolute classic from Neudorf, Harzgerode, Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany and in a super size for display. This very large miniature specimen features a classic cubo-octahedral Galena crystal perched on the end of a flat plate of fudge-coloured rhombic Siderite crystals. This association has Neudorf written all over it and it should come as no surprise that this specimen was in the stunning collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021). The Galena crystal is , at over 3 cm across, very large for what you see from Neudorf and is nicely formed. It is quite rounded on its edges, but this does appears to be natural, otherwise one would expect to see broken cleavage surfaces which are not present. It also has a very nice bright metallic lustre - not mirror bright, but still highly reflective in places. Traces of what appears to be orange-brown Sphalerite can also be seen underneath the Galena crystal. These types of specimen from Neudorf are well over a hundred years old and are up there as worldwide classics for the combination of Galena and Siderite. A superb piece, worthy of the highest quality collection.
