ANHYDRITE

Stassfurt Potash deposit, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
$2800€2352£2058$2800
SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

It seems remarkable that a mineral as common as Anhydrite so rarely forms crystals. Infact, in some evaporite deposits there are metre thick beds of solid Anhydrite extending for tens of kilometres, or more, but not a single crystal to be seen. The Stassfurt Potash deposit in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany is different, but crystals are still very rare. This 2.3 cm tall, single, orthorhombic, Anhydrite crystal is a classic. It displays the faint violet colour famous from this deposit, but the crystal itself is nearly double the size of others seen for there. It is mounted on an acrylic base for display. Ex Martin and Michael Gunther collection and ex University of Greiswald Geological Institute with a lovely old handwritten label.
