DIGENITE

SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

Of all the copper sulphide minerals Digenite is one of the least seen, or represented in mineral collections and when it is it is usually as massive infillings rather than discrete crystals. That's what makes this large miniature specimen from the systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) so fine. It comes from Bachke mine at Kvalsund, Hammerfest inTroms og Finnmark in the remote far north of Norway and presents classic dark indigo-blue Digenite as extensive veinlets in Calcite as well as discrete nicely formed individual rounded equant crystals to 4.5 mm across some with fine trigonal growth lines. All of the copper sulphide mineralization within this specimen appears to be Digenite, making it a rather rich example of this rarely seen species.
