Wheal Jewel is by the hamlet Crofthandy in the parish of Gwennap, just south east of St. Day and the more famous mines of Wheals Gorland, Muttrall and Unity. It worked from 1815 (date of the Battle of Waterloo) up to 1852 during which it produced over 58,000 tons of copper. It is now known amongst collectors for several well crystallised species, with Tennantite being the best of these. This rich example measures to 12.5 cm with a matrix of mixed massive Tennantite and Quartz forming the core, with all surfaces, save the base, encrusted in earthy, matt grey Tennantite crystals with a fine granular texture. Well formed aggregates of Tennantite crystals can attain 2.5 to 3 cm in width and at one end a roughly 4 x 2.5 cm plate of Tennantite projects out from the specimen.
