CINNABAR

SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

Landsberg (Moschellandsberg) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany is one of the classic mercury producing regions in Europe. This large miniature specimen from Landsberg displays Cinnabar cementing brecciated rock. The Cinnabar is not particularly well crystallized but displays both the typical dark blood-red colour of massive Cinnabar and vivid red of its powdery form. The specimen comes with several old collection labels, one of which appears to date to the early 20th century, or perhaps earlier - from Staatl Mineralien-Niederlage in Freiberg. A good representative sample of mercury ore from Landsberg.
